Description of a level crossing
A level crossing will consist of 35lb rail recessed into a concrete plinth or existing road surface. Guarded level crossings incorporate catch switches either side of the public roadway and a boom / barrier type gate attached to a counterbalanced swing post. The gates are manually opened and closed by the locomotive drivers. Swing posts and latching posts are set in concrete. Gates have warning beacons and reflective signs attached. Rail line gradients for 150m either side of a level crossing must be level or falling away from the public road. Appropriate warning signs are sited on the roads on the approach to the level crossing.
